NY stars to swoon LeBron, Reggie Bush sad, the effects of Texas TV, and Izzo is a "lifer"
By: Travis Williams
Thought #1 With plenty of teams trying to swoon LeBron James it seems the New York Knicks might have just hit a new low in desperation. It seems the Knicks have asked an entourage of stars to prepare a little intervention for Lebron. The committee includes Donald Trump, Alec Badwin, Tracy Morgon, Chris Rock, and maybe even Whoopi Goldberg if James gets lucky, I mean she did get that middle slot on Hollywood Squares.
Seriously though, how bad are the Knicks that the best sales pitch they can muster up is "hey come to our team, Whoopi likes us!" How bad are they that they are openly pursuing this mega squad of B-listers to court James to the Big Apple. They're no longer pitching the possibility of winning a ring or even the idea of joining a classic NBA franchise, you're pitching a guess spot with Donald on the Apprentice.
Even worse what if this is the deciding factor in LeBron's choice? What if getting that gig as Tracy's cousin on 30-Rock is the major selling point? Will that be the angle that works or will it be Chris Rock's explanation of violence on streets named Martin Luther King Jr.? You know, get the dude laughing, tell him you got Sandler's number on speed dial, and suddenly he's signed. It's a long shot, but Whoopi getting LeBron that bottom square might possibly be the Knicks' best shot.
Thought #2 Reggie Bush is pretty upset about the USC sanctions that came down last week, in fact he claims it was like "death without dying." Now the allegations, of which Bush was at the forefront of, have cost the Trojans 2 future post seasons and about 30 scholarships. Interestingly enough, outside of the chance he will lose his Heisman trophy for the season that he should never have played in, Reggie will most likely get away untouched.
So yeah, "death without dying" is a good way of saying punished but not punished. Sure it might sting a little knowing that some kid just lost a ride to USC because of what he did, or that there will be no bowl game for the Trojans this season no matter how great they are, but is that really a punishment? Yeah I'm sure it feels awful having someone else pay for your crime, but it comes with the cheating and running territory Reggie so deal with it.
Thought #3It seems the deciding factor in Texas staying in the Big 12 was the possibility of them building their how cable channel. Apparently the Pac-10 was not willing to let the Longhorn nation start their own network, which allowed the Big-12 to slide in and say, "hey we'll go for that." Rumor has it that Oklahoma is also considering going the cable channel route.
So who does all this moving and shaking really effect outside of Colorado fans? Could be me and you.
Think about this, Texas getting it's own cable channel could very easily start a nasty trend of me and you having to upgrade our cable packages. You know that won't be pretty either. You know that package will include your favorite team's channel and about 300 other random government, cooking, and animal channels that you will never know exist, let alone watch.
Sad thing is, as much as wed fight it, we'd end up dropping that extra $15 a month to watch our boys play and they know that. This isn't NASCAR Hot Pass we're talking about, this is College Football and Basketball, the cocaine of the sports world. We're hooked and will be far more likely to pay for it than spend our Saturdays in the corner shaking from withdrawal in the fetal position.
Thought #4The Tom Izzo internal debate appears to be over, Izzo coming out today and claiming he is going to stay at Michigan State for life. He is a "lifer."
Now, I'm not 100% sold on this statement, I am sold on the fact that Izzo couldn't get a straight answer from LeBron on his future in Cleveland and wasn't about to buy into coaching a team with Mo Williams as the headliner.
This does bring to mind a question; who do you believe is a "lifer?" Who do you think falls into the ranks up there with the Bobby Bowdens and Joe Pas of the world?
