After Party Thoughts:Ok, it's Super Bowl Sunday so let's just a grab a few quick ones this morning:
- Hall of FamersDeion Sanders, Marshall Faulk, Shannon Sharpe, Richard Dent, The NFL Films guy, and two other guys you don't know, but people on TV will tell you were great were elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
A couple of thoughts on these guys:
- DeionWas awesome and is largely responsible for all the NFL beginning the crackdown on sweet endzone celebrations. Yeah T.O. and OchoCinco pushed it to a more obnoxious level, but this was the originator. Those guys might be the more modern street gangs of the dancing-sharpie hiding-popcorn eating world, but Deion was the Al Capone of ticking off the old guys who run the game.
With that said, I love some Deion-dancing and hope he breaks one out as they give him his coat.
- Marshall Faulk So that's the guy on that one Madden cover! Listen, the guy was awesome and really helped reinvent how teams use their backs, but he is so easily to over look for some reason. For whatever reason the 10th leading rusher of all time's name just doesn't stick as well as the Emmits, Barrys, and Paytons of the football world.
- Ed Sabol - NFL Films guyThis guy saved me from having spend many a snow day watching Oprah. ESPN would always seem to drop one of those films on in the middle of the day when we were out of school and it would always suck me in. He is like the NFL's grandma who never threw anything out. At first you think it is kind of silly that she keeps scraps of every single thing you do, but then one day when you realize you have a chest full of instant memories, you are really thankful for what she did. Thanks Ed.
SUPER BOWL SUNDAY Q&A!Alright, enough looking back. Time to look forward at tonight's battles.
- Roethlisberger or Rodgers? Both are great quarterbacks, but Aaron is more pure and seems to have a better overall grasp of the game. With that said, I'm taking Ben in this game because he is fat. Both of these guys are going to get hit and Ben's extra cushion will help him survive a little longer and produce a little better.
- Who is a under-the-radar guy for each team?
For the Steelers I'll go with Heath Miller, who is the Pittsburgh's third leading receiver and could easily be Ben's safest bet when rushed. This is also Miller's third Super Bowl appearance, giving experience that should pay off with a big game.
For the Packers Charles Woodson is the guy I could stepping up with a big play. If the Packers can get a decent rush on Ben and attack his throwing arm the way they've been talking about, they should be able to force him to put a little air under the ball and give Charles a chance to make a big play.
- Who really wins the best hair battle?Clay Matthews has really made a push for the crown this season. His WWF-style dome is impressive and kind of makes you get White Snake songs stuck in your head. The problem though is he is the challenger and like anything, he is really going to have to go above and beyond to knock Troy Polamalu off the mountain. Plus, there is just something about Troy's hair that gives it kind of a holy feel. Did he once kill a lion with a donkey's jawbone? I don't know. But I do know if he cuts it, he will never be the same.
Honestly though, if that crown gets passed to anyone it will probably be Steeler
Brent Keisel. Just take a look at that guy and tell me if that beard is even real. He looks like some sort of lumberjack from a book of tall tales, who can no doubt ride tornadoes and lives off a diet of raw raccoon and tree sap.
- Better fan prop? Both the Cheesehead and the Terrible Towel are classics, but I like the towel here. It is just more functional. It can be used as a bib, a scarf, a necktie, a baby blanket, or simply as a way to leave a sweet whelp on your little brother's neck.
The Cheesehead on the other hand is cool, but really doesn't do anything else. Granted if we ever get infested with packs of giant rats we could use the heads to lure them into a trap, but I'm thinking we're still a couple decades away from that scenario. Towel wins.
- How much money will James Harrison owe the league after today? So far this season he has been fined double what would be considered a very good salary for the majority of the country at $125,000. But I really don't think he cares. I'm guessing the dude gets pretty amped up about going after Aaron Rodgers today and a bill for about 75-grand is in the mail to him on Monday.
- Fergie or Christina Aguilera?Fergie, hands down. Christian is far too 1998 truck stop for my liking. Unless I need some advice on video poker or that machine you put quarters in to try and push the quarters off the edge, I won't be talking to her.
- Bigger game, Donald Driver or Hines Ward? Both play major roles for their teams as the veteran receiver, but Hines has had his day in the sun and Donald hasn't. I think the Packers will make a conscious effort to get him the ball, while I think Hines will be over shadowed by Mike Wallace and Heath Miller.
- Is the Maurkice Pouncey story really that big of a deal?Nope. Sure B.J. Raji might benefit from playing against Doug Legursky, but odds are he would have had a pretty decent day anyway. The Steelers have known about this for a while, so they will be prepared. The bottom line is that other than Ben singing Piano Man, this was the only real storyline to follow this week.
- Who wins in a fight Phil Simms or Desmond Howard? We came real close to getting the answer
this week, but the cops prevented us from having a nice pre-game throw down. Phil's got the size advantage, but I think Desmond's quick feet would get the best of him.
- Best game-time snack?Very tricky one. For during the game you want to be careful not to go too heavy on the salsa or dips because of the potential for a disaster due to lack of attention being paid in the bowl-to-mouth process. Doritos can eliminate that danger, however a mean case of Dorito fingers can leave just as nasty of a stain. For this reason I suggest Chex Mix and beef jerky. The Chipotle Cheddar blend is money and beef jerky will keep you busy for a while, either chewing or attempting to floss afterwards with a plastic folk.
- So who wins?I like the Steelers to get to Aaron Rodgers and knock him off his game, while also successfully running on the Green Bay defense. The fact everyone says it will be a close game scares me, but I'm hoping they are right.
